iMakeupMirror Review - iPhone4 App

This is an independent review by Andrea M. "I was introduced to the iMakeupMirror application today for my iPhone4 and I have to say that I haven't found an app like this one since owning my iPhone. The iMakeupMirror illuminates the screen and enables me to see myself even in the darkest of clubs, bathrooms, or restaurants. As a busy writer who is involved in several local activities I find myself running from place to place when I'm not typing away. From the laptop, to the gym, to a meeting with clients; sometimes I literally pack a bag in the morning and live out of it all day.

This is where the iMakeupMirror has come in handy on numerous occasions. Instead of remembering to pack an extra mirror or compact in my bag that could potentially shatter or break and make a dusty mess in my purse, I simply switch to this app on my phone when a mirror isn't in sight and I need to check myself out. We all know how embarrassing it could be to meet a friend or client after lunch and realize that there's something in your teeth. With this application I don't have to worry about that ever again. I can take a look after every meal when I'm on the go.

I also travel a lot so the iMakeupMirror has been useful when I'm on the plane or waiting for a cab. If you've ever had to go from the airport to a meeting whether it's business or pleasure you want to look your best. The lines are often long for bathrooms, and your make-up bag is tucked away in your suitcase because of TSA regulations. This is when the iMakeupMirror saves the day. You can simply whip it out, do a touch up, smooth fly away hairs, or check your smile before you go. I know that I have had a powder compact burst in my bag a time or two and the experience is messy, costly and overall just a pain. This application completely eliminates the risk of that small tragedy happening.

Excessive clutter in my bag is another reason I love the iMakeupMirror. I like to carry a small bag whenever possible so having this on my phone eliminates the need to try to fit in a separate mirror. If I do carry a large bag and have to carry several items such as a phone, compact, lipstick, wallet, etc., they seem to get lost in the bottom. Having my phone do double duty in this department is great for eliminating another item to clutter the bottom of my bag.

I've also used the iMakeupMirror in a dark club and it worked wonderfully. I was able to reapply lip-gloss without smearing it everywhere and I didn't have to wait in line to use the bathroom mirror. Plus, I was able to carry a sexy little clutch because the only mirror I needed was already in my phone. On a scale from 1-10 on usefulness I'd give this app a 9. It's incredibly handy, and you don't necessarily look like you're looking in a mirror while you're using it (which I love). People assume you're just looking at your phone. If you haven't tried it, please do. Your face will thank you."

From BeautyDebutante - Nail of the Day: Essie Berry Hard

Signup for BeautyDebutante's Daily Newsletter - click here.

Essie Berry Hard is a deep brown toned red which I didn’t think would look good with my skin tone, but it works. I also have no idea why I decided to wear this in the summer, it’s definitely more of a fall/winter color. You could get away with three coats, but I used four. I had no problems with the formula and can’t wait for fall to use it again!

From Denim Debutante - SOLD Design Lab is a new brand

SOLD Design Lab is a new brand that features extra-stretchy denim made without a zipper to avoid that uncomfortable (and definitely unsightly!) bulge underneath tunics. It’s a fun hybrid between the super legging-y denim and straight jeans.

They’re fairly trendy, but still have some great, flattering fits that you’ll love. See if you can guess who’s behind this line!

It’s the creators of Lei Denim! This is definitely a higher end line (at around a $100 price point), so I’m not sure how much in common these brands have with each other beyond the same designers.

From BeautyDebutante - Skincare Review: Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil

For more on iMakeupMirror - http://imakeupmirror.com

A little while ago I was sent some Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil from Beautorium.com. to test. I decided to do a little research into this product before I put it on my face.

First of all Beautorium.com is a site where you can do one stop shopping for your entire natural and organic beauty needs. They have a ton of products to choose from and the site is mapped out very well. Each product comes with a wealth of information from ingredients to how to use to its organic certification and more. I like the upfront information and the ease of searching.

OK. Where does Rosehip oil come from? Well Rose Hips of course! You have probably hear of rose hip tea and rose hip enhanced vitamin c pills…well rose hips are the seed pod left after all the rose petals fall off the flower. The oil from rose hips, often called rosa mosqueta, is very nutritious. It is unique among vegetable oils in containing retinol (Vitamin A), and is also high in vitamin C. Rose hip seed oil is high in the essential fatty acids – linoleic acid or omega-6, and linolenic acid or omega-3. It is commonly used in skin care products.

Rose hip oil is used for a variety of skin conditions such as acne, eczema, sun burnt skin, wrinkles and used to heal scarring and diminish photo-aging. Since the rosehip oil contains Vitamin A it can help delay the effects of skin aging and assist with cell regeneration and promote collagen and elastin levels. Rosehip oil also contains a high amount of essential fatty acids and Vitamin E, which further promotes healthy skin.

The Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil I received is very gentle on the skin and it can be used undiluted (unlike some other essential oils) on the skin with little to no adverse reaction.. It can also be added to lotions, creams, and shampoos. This Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil easily absorbs into the skin and does not leave behind a greasy residue.

When I applied directly to the skin on my face, I used my fingertips to massage it in until it is completely absorbed. I did this twice a day for a month on my face but made sure to use sunscreen every day on top of the oil.

The results?
Well I certainly had softer skin, but I found that I experienced a few break outs while using the oil. That’s because I have VERY oily skin and I think this oil may have clogged my pores a bit, however, have very acne prone skin and I break out just typing the word ‘Acne’…whoops. There’s another pimple!…so I cannot say for sure it was the Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil that broke out my skin. I did not notice a significant decrease in old acne scars, but I did notice that my face seemed to glow a bit more. Perhaps it was the extra hydration for my skin…because even if you have oily skin, you can still have dehydrated oily skin. Ugh. Trust me. It can happen. The skin on my face felt more balanced be the end of the day and I didn’t feel like I was as much of an oily mess as I am used to being. Perhaps because my skin was getting essential fatty acids it didn’t feel the need to produce as much oil as it normally does.

What I really liked about Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil is that it comes in a small dark glass colored bottle. This helps keep light off the product which can cause the relatively short shelf life of rosehip oil to degrade even more. I also really like the little eye dropper that is in the cap. I can get a measured amount for each application and I don’t have to introduce any stray bacteria or other debris from my fingers and hands into the Trilogy bottle. This means I can extend the purity of the product and make sure that I don’t turn the oil rancid by the mere act of dispensing the product. It is recommended that most rosehip oil is kept refrigerated, but the documentation that came with this bottle didn’t mention that.

The Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil bottle holds 20 ml / .67 fl oz. that’s quite a lot when you only need a couple of drops for your face, so I started to add it to my regular lotion when I apply it at night and I started to massage some into my cuticles every night as well. Because I don’t want to run the risk of the oil turning rancid if I add it to a big bottle of lotion, I pump out some lotion into my hand and add a few drops of Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil to the product and mix it together for that one time usage. Basically I add it when I need it.

So far the results have been good. While I haven’t used it long enough to see marked improvement, I do like the fact that my skin feels softer and looks better overall. I also like the fact that I’m not adding any unnecessary chemicals or pesticides to my skin. Trilogy products contain 100% natural active ingredients. The rosehip oil is certified organic by Bio-Gro of New Zealand. This product contains no parabens, petrochemicals, PEGs, pesticides, synthetic colors or fragrances, GMOs , or harsh surfactants. Since the product is certified organic I can feel safe using it. If I ever do run out, and trust me a small bottle goes a long way, I’ll be sure to buy some more. This is a great addition to my daily beauty ritual.

You can purchase a 20ml bottle of Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil for $20 USD from beautorium.com

Skincare Review – High Sierra Botanicals
by Joey on August 17, 2010

Holly Beatie is a former competitive athlete from the Sierra Foothills who, after her retirement in 1997, decided to take a journey of self-discovery and healing. Her reevaluation of her life lead her to the study of flowers, herbs, and the development of all natural products for the body and skin – High Sierra Botanicals was born. Using either wild-crafted or organically-grown products, Beatie handmakes her own products from scratch. Her products all contain pure therapeutic essential oils, organic herbs, healing/nutritional oils and butters, and flower essences. I was sent five products from her line.

A summary of my thoughts: These products are effective but highly moisturizing, so much so that the majority of them aren’t appropriate for the humid, muggy NYC summer. My dry skin will love them come the fall/winter, though. The packaging isn’t the most aesthetically-pleasing, but the products that they contain work, and work well.

Glisten Up: Glisten Up is a toner/cleanser that comes in a bottle that requires you to shake it onto a cotton pad. The smell is pleasant. I was surprised at how moisturizing this toner was; it didn’t dry out my skin, but actually added a layer of moisture to it while still giving it a clean, fresh feeling. My skin was not red after using it, which usually indicates minor irritation (my skin is very dry and sensitive). I found that I could only use this product at night, though – NYC summer is very humid and muggy, so despite my dry skin, I have to use very little moisturizer. Using this product at night ensured that I would wake up with soft, glowy skin. Once the weather cools down, I can use this twice a day. This retails for $11 (2 fl. oz).

Ingredients: Rose hydrosol, Witch Hazel, Elder Flower & White Grape Extracts, Apple Cider Vinegar, Polysorbate 20; Avocado, Olive, and Jojoba oils; Essential oils of Lavender, Grapefruit, Geranium, Rosemary, Thyme; 6 Flower Essences.

Wrinkle Wrangler: Wrinkle Wrangler is an extremely potent moisturizer, housed in a small screw-top jar. It contains over 50 ingredients, including numerous oils and butters. Beatie describes this as being soothing and luxurious, and she’s right. It’s just too luxurious for the weather right now! I only need the tiniest amount of this moisturizer (at night only!) and my skin is moisturized for hours and hours. I like to really rub it into my skin to help improve circulation, and decrease any inflammation. This moisturizer is good for a year if stored in a cool environment, so I’ll be sure to put this away for the winter, when it’ll be a godsend! I’ve also been using it on my body as well, and it’s great for softening up rough skin. This retails for $12 (for 15 ml) or $33 (for 50 ml).

Ingredients: Oils: Apricot, Hemp, Olive, Coconut, Jojoba, Grapeseed, Wheat Germ, Rosehip; Lanolin; Aloe; Cocoa, Shea, Mango butters; Mimosa wax; Manuka Honey; Raw Silk; Rosewater; Herbal extracts: Angelica seed, Selfheal, St. John’s Wort, Comfrey Leaf, Seaweed, Horsetail, Rosemary; Citric Acid; Essential oils of Elemi, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Myrrh, Neroli, Orange, Fennel, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Cedar, Carrot seed; 14 Flower Essences.

Mudslinger: This is such an appropriate name for this mask. It’s goopy, it’s messy, and it looks exactly like mud. I was turned off initially by the texture and scent of this mask (it smells very herbal), but then I used it. WHOA. Let me describe this first. This mask is so…un-masklike! Most masks are pretty drying for the skin, and leave the skin red or irritated – at least that happens to me a lot. Mudslinger is so comforting for the skin, yet it left my skin looking clearer and cleaner than it was before I used it! This mask contains clay, which helps draw out impurities from the skin. It contains mild exfoliators, which also help draw out impurities but also helps to brighten the skin by removing dead skin cells. Also, it has oils to moisturize. It is a facial in a jar, and I’m glad I gave it a chance despite my very turned-off initial reaction to it. Once a week usage (again, at night) refreshes my skin and leaves me looking as if I had a relaxing vacation! My only gripe about this product is the packaging. This mask is very oily, and it’s contained in a jar – the jar leaks! I think this would be best in a squeeze tube. This retails for $33 (50 fl.oz).

Ingredients: Raw silk, Squalene, Rose hydrosol, Shea Butter, Oils: Avocado, Pumplin seed, Jojoba, Wheat germ, Raspberry seed, Rosehip,Vitamin E; Clays: French Green, Pascalite, Rhassoul, Canadian glacial, Moroccan Red; Aloe, Oats, Lecithin, Manuka honey, Royal jelly, Nettle, Alfalfa, Chlorophyl, Rosehips, Irish Moss, Aloe, Marshmallow, Rosemary, DMAE, MSM, CoQ10, Essential Oils: Geranium, Palmarosa, Ylang Ylang, Carrot; 10 Flower Essences.

Harmoneyes: Interestingly, this was also the one product I was able to use during the day! Beatie describes this as a creamy serum which helps nourish and bind moisture to the eyes, among other benefits. This was more of a slightly gritty, runny cream; despite the texture, it sank right into the skin underneath my eyes. I enjoyed this because it moisturized but created a velvet surface which was perfect for applying makeup onto! At night, I’d prefer something more cushy and oily. This retails for $15 (10ml).

Ingredients: Aloe, Beta Carotene, Rosehip, Raspberry, Evening Primrose Seed Oils, Polysorbate 20, Algae, Cucumber, Green Tea Extracts, Ellagic & Hyaluronic Acids, Raw Silk, Squalene, DMAE, Citric Acid, Essential oils of Chamomile, Carrot Seed; 10 Flower Essences.

X-Zit: This is a roll-on blemish treatment, which I like because I can carry it around whenever a stupid pimple pops up on my face. It is antibiotic and anti-bacterial, and helps to kill blemishes without making my skin red or peel-y. It does take a few days to work, but it does work! This retails for $8 (10ml).

Ingredients: Glycerin, Aloe, Rose Hydrosol, Witch Hazel, Jojoba and Wheat Germ oils, Polysorbate 20, Essential oils of Lavender, Bergamot, Petitegrain, Cypress, Cedar, and others; 5 Flower Essences.

So, bottom line? I really enjoyed the products, but the majority of them aren’t appropriate for my skin at the moment. I will love these more when it gets colder. Also, after reading about the rest of the products, I really want to try Headcase Aura Spray (since I have chronic migraines) and Stressless Tresses Hair Tonic! What are your thoughts?

, shoes to women’s denim, there’s a little bit of everything, and it will all go on sale starting at 11am EST. Stick to your standard 7 For All Mankind sizing and head over to the 7 For All Mankind review and posts for more details about the brand itself.

- Modnique is having a Hollywood Million Denim sale starting today at 10am EST. This brand is fairly unfamiliar to me – I’ve never tried it before – but the deals should be decent, particularly if you like jeans with embellishments.

- I have faith that there might be a pair or two of denim in the Marc by Marc Jacobs sale that starts today on Gilt Groupe. Be there at 12pm EST, because even if there isn’t any denim, the sale itself will still be one you won’t want to miss.

- There are a couple pairs of jeans in ideeli‘s Fall Essentials sale (including brands like James Jeans, 7 For All Mankind and more) as well as great items you can’t say no to (Linea Pelle, anyone?). We missed this baby yesterday, so be sure to check it before it’s gone!

- The sale that is bound to actually break the bank (but only if you buy a TON of pairs)?!? Hautelook is having a Les Halles blowout, and this line’s fun 70′s/80′s throwback feel will definitely fit perfectly into your fall wardrobe. Sale starts at 11am EST, so be ready.

Any sales I missed? Leave a comment and I’ll be sure to add them to the list ASAP!

Love,
JP
